T.L. Sherwood

Name:  T. L. Sherwood
I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t writing. I started scribbling with crayons in the most inappropriate places at a very young age--not pictures--just vague resemblances to letters. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with everything within the realm of writing. Driving through Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania when the paper mill was running evoked admiration. When my Uncle G. V. took me around the Orlando Sentinel’s offices and production area was one of the happiest tours I’ve ever taken. I devour books, magazines, newspapers and now blogs and ezines. I love it all--reading, writing, critiquing, encouraging others in their writing. Above and below, sideways down and on a slant, I am a writer.

I don't know if it's a common technique, but I'm a "place-bottom-in-chair and fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants" type of writer. Most of my poetry comes out very close to correct the first time. Except villanelles. I keep trying to write one of those and they are tough to master. When I write stories, I often have to go back and fill in details to make it engaging to the reader. While I know the roses some guy threw at some girl were white, the reader doesn't. I forget that sometimes. I think writing is like gardening. The plain heartless truth is that gardening is more weeding than anything else. Writing is revising. The hard parts make it all look beautiful and effortless in the end.

Likes: Acceptance letters. Sterling Silver roses. The spell check function. Pansies. Sycamore trees. The intense punishing pleasure that is National Novel Writing month. TMZ for the touch of the absurd and the blonde haired guy. Hummingbirds. Books--every size, sort, typeface, genre and price. 88.7 WBFO radio. My Oxford English Dictionary. Duotrope. Blues music: Larry Gardner, Shemika Copeland, Kellie Hunt, Tinsley Ellis. Zoetrope Virtual Studio. The Rolling Stones. Gargoyles. Cheap champagne.  British Comedies: Butterflies, Absolutely Fabulous!, Red Dwarf, Outnumbered. Most of my family. Pilates. Douglas Adams. Chocolate. Well seasoned cast iron pans. Halloween. Coffee. Friends.
Dislikes: PICKLES! Crunchy peanut butter. Grocery store clerks who insist on putting all the canned goods in one bag and a loaf of bread and a bag of potato chips in the other. People I know falling ill or falling and breaking something. Rejection letters. Unrequited love. Saint Patrick's Day because it always falls during Lent. The Subdudes. The particular "not quite right" shade of purple. Overcooked asparagus. The number 1147. Dirty dishes. Having to listen to Irish Brogue spoken or Celtic music played for more than 10 seconds. Anita West, the disc jockey on WBFO who says she plays the blues, then plays AC/DC instead. Muddy dog prints on freshly washed floors. Floods. Tornadoes. Bugs that bite me. Frozen pipes in winter.

Status: Married quite happily to a carpenter who transformed a spare bedroom into a library for all my books.

Anything else: I want to thank E. S. Wynn for this opportunity. I am honored to be chosen as this week’s featured artist.
